It’s a big hype at the moment: the messy bun beanie.
I’m a member of different Facebook groups and these hats keep showing up in my timeline!
The messy bun hat is also known as a ponytail hat. They can also be used while running.
In Holland these hats aren’t a big hype yet, so I took my chance and wrote a Dutch pattern.
For you, I translated it into English!
I used worsted weight yarn and hook size 5 mm.

Abbreviations (US)
ch = chain
sl st = slip stitch
sc = single crochet
dc = double crochet
st = stitch
fpdc = front post double crochet.
2 dctog = 2 double crochet together
Messy bun beanie crochet pattern
Model 1: one color with border stitch
Each ch3 is the first dc of the next round. For example: round 1 says ch3 at the end. The ch3 is the first dc of round 2.
Chain 30 and close.
Round1
Dc in each st around ( 30 )
Close with sl st in first dc and turn. Ch3.
Round 2
2 dc in each st around (60)
Close with sl st in first dc and turn. Ch3.
Round 3
1 dc in each st around.(60)
Close with sl st in first dc and turn. Ch3.
Round 4
(dc in next 4 sts -2 dc in next) around (72)
Close, turn, ch3.
Round 5
(dc in next 5 sts -2 dc in next) around (84)
Close. Don’t turn, don’t ch3.
From here on you don’t turn your work anymore. I made a video tutorial for round 6 – 8. Please turn on the subtitles if you watch it. They explain what I’m doing.

Round 6
(Sc – skip next st – dc, ch1, dc in next – skip next st) around.
Close with a sl st in the first sc of the round. Ch3 (=1st dc of round 7!)
Round 7
(dc in sc previous round – ch1 – sc in chain space -ch1) around.
Close with a sl st in the first dc of the round.
Round 8
(1 sc in de of previous round – dc, ch1, dc in sc of previous round) around.
Repeat round 7 and 8 four times. Then crochet round 7 one more time.
Brim.
You don’t have to turn after closing rounds.
Start each new round with ch3 (=1st dc)
Round 1
dc in each st and space: (12 dc – 2 dctog) around. Close. (78)
Round 2
(dc – fpdc) around.
Close.
Round 3 – 5
Repeat round 2.
Round 6
Sc in each st around.
Close and fasten off. Weave in the ends.
Model 2: 2 colors and a different edging.
Start like model 1:
Crochet round 1 – 5 with color 1.
(Round 6 en 7: color 2
Round 6 en 7: color 1)
Repeat 2 times.
Then crochet round 6 and 7 using color 2.
Edging with color 1:
(Sc – skip chain space – 3 dc in next – skip ch space) around.
Close and fasten off. Weave in the ends.

Question on row 4 says 4 DC 2 in the next. So does that mean that repeats Al the way around 4 DC, 2 DC in the next 4 DC 2 in the next? That’s what I’m thinking but want to be sure.
You start with: *dc-dc-dc-dc-2 dc in 1 stitch* and repeat *-* until the end of the round. I hope this is helpful!
Does this mean that you will have 6 DC in each stitch of the previous round? Seems that it would be more than 72 stitches for the 4th round.
You crochet 1 dc in the next four stitches and 2 dc in the fifth stitch. You continue doing that until the end of the round. Then you have 72 stitches.

“dc in 1st” is where im stuck. Am I suppose to go back to the first sc stitch or are you just saying to proceed to the next stitch after ch1.

I do mean you have to proceed to the next stitch after ch1. I just changed that part of the pattern.
I have a similar question. When starting the 2nd round 6, where we sc into previous round 7’s dc. Then skip next st. Is the next st we skip the ch 1 or the sc?

Help! when I get to Row 6 everything is fine. Row 7 is okay but the hat becomes smaller. Then when I repeat row 6 it gets smaller again. Row 6 has 6 stitches with the skips but row 7 has 4 stitches. So I think I am dropping 2 stitches each time. What am I doing wrong?

I suspect something is going wrong with closing and starting a new round. I’ll put that part in the video.

Row 7 states DC IN SC PREVIOUS ROUND but row 6 doesn’t include any SC? There are 2 CH 1 spaces…confusing directions to me….
Stuck on Round 6-7 as instructions are different here than in video. In video for beginning of round 7 you chain 4 for a DC instead of Chain 3 for DC.. then here you have SC in chain space while on video you have DC in chain space? Which is correct?
I’m having trouble with 7 and 8 , Round 7 is clear to me but when I get to round 8.
I’m feeling the pattern needs a chain stitch following the sc
___otherwise it decreases in size.
